From its founding in 1995, Detroit Community Initiative, Inc. (DCI) recognized the greatest community need was in the area of youth development services. Over time, the programming has grown from summer day camps and special events to include year-round services.
DCI provides classes in computer literacy, job readiness training, cultural diversity, community service projects. Youth services and donated goods provide enrichment to children ages 4-17.
Annually, DCI implements a variety of clean and safe initiatives to improve the safety and appearance of Detroit neighborhoods. Whether it is cleaning and painting a local play field or removing unsightly illegal signs from utility poles and vacant buildings, these activities are designed to mobilize community volunteerism. Five years ago, DCI teens and volunteers began using GIS technology to map the strengths and weaknesses of northeast Detroit. With support from The Knight Foundation and Wayne state University, DCI has shared this high tech development tool with other community groups to assist them with restoration activities.
GIS stands for Geographical Information Systems. We create professional maps of our neighborhoods and specific target areas within Detroit. The possibilities are endless. Utilizing hand held computers and global positioning devices, local teens identify neighborhood conditions. Our teens mapped the locations of abandoned cars, dangerous housing, and other barriers to public safety. (see report) Possible build sites for infill housing or new retail are also recorded. Information is shared with Law Enforcement, Local Developers, and residents in a joint effort to improve neighborhood conditions.
